Campaign Within the Law, Warns ICO

05/05/2017

The Information Commissioner has written to all the major political parties to remind them of their data protection obligations when contacting potential supporters during the General Election campaign.

The rules regarding nuisance calls, texts, emails and data security are no different during the election process from at any other time. Members of the public have a right to expect that their personal information will be used in accordance with data protection law and any breaches of a party's obligations in that regard may be punished.

The website of the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) contains guidance for members of the public on when campaign groups can contact you and how they should handle any personal information about you that they collect and hold.

The ICO has also published guidance on political campaigning. This includes a section on the use of data analytics and associated technologies by political parties for campaigning purposes.
